DUSHANBE, May 21, 2009, Asia-Plus — On 21 April 2009 a mudflow destroyed more than 60 houses in three villages in Khuroson district, Khatlon province.  More than 1500 people were affected and in need of immediate aid. On May 14 2009 another mudflow deteriorated the situation in already affected villages, destroying another 120 houses.

The GTZ Dushanbe Office says the Federal Republic of Germany, through GTZ Tajikistan, granted a donation of 125.000 somoni (TJS) for emergency aid, to support the victims of the mudflow.

The donation has been transferred already to the Tajikistan Office of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).  The Federation will use these funds, in collaboration with Red Crescent Society of Tajikistan, for procurement and delivery of food and non-food items.  The donation is allocated additionally to the IFRC Appeal of 23 April 2009.

At the moment the Federal Republic of Germany is considering a possible contribution, provided through GTZ Tajikistan, for the recovery phase.
