DUSHANBE, April 27, 2011, Asia-Plus — Female crime reportedly shows a downward tendency in Tajikistan.

In a report released at a news conference in Dushanbe, the chairperson of the Committee for Family and Women Family Affairs, Sumanqul Taghoyeva, noted on Aril 26 that 92 crimes have been committed by women over the first three months of this year, which is 195 cases fewer than in the same period last year.

“In the meantime, the number of crimes committee against women is steadily increasing,” said Taghoyeva, “963 such crimes have been reported in the country over the first quarter of this year, while 731 crimes against women were reported in January-March 2010.”

She also noted that the number of suicides among women has decreased in the country.  “61 women, including 10 underage girls, committed suicide in January-March 2011, which is 26 cases fewer than in the same period last year (the number of suicides among underage girls decreased by seven cases),” Taghoyeva noted.

According to her, the most serious situation is in the northern Sughd province, where 26 female suicides have been reported over the report period.

Besides, 22 female suicides have been reported in Khatlon province, eight in districts subordinate to the center and five in Dushanbe.  Gorno Badakhshan is the only region where no suicide cases have been reported over the same three-month period.  “In 2010, four men committed suicide in Gorno Badakhshan,” Taghoyeva said.

She added that domestic violence and family problems are the main cause of female suicide.
