DUSHANBE, November 20, Asia-Plus  — Celebrations to mark the 70th birthday of known Tajik poet Bozor Sobir are scheduled to be held in Dushanbe next spring,  Abdulhomid Samadov, first deputy head of Tajik Writers’ Union, told Asia-Plus today.

“We were supposed to hold a poetry party dedicated to jubilee of our famous poet yesterday but then decided to postpone the event till next March because we knew that Bozor Sobir is going to visit Tajikistan in March to attend celebrations dedicated to the Navrouz holiday,” Samadov said.

According to him, they also plan to organize a conference dedicated to works of the poet.

We will recall that Bozor Sobir currently lives in the United States.

Bozor Sobir graduated from Tajik National University, Faculty of Tajik Philology, in 1962 and had worked with the magazines Maorif va Madaniyat (Education and Culture) and Sadoi Sharq (Voice of the East).

During the Soviet period, his verses had been widely translated into Russian and other languages and even published in Iran.  With the advent of ‘glasnost” he became actively involved in the political and cultural movements for an independent national identity.

Bozor Sobir is considered to be one of the most popular poets in Tajikistan and one of the best known to the outside world.
