Sughd police to discuss issues to counter terrorism and extremism

KHUJAND, August 28, 2012, Asia-Plus  — The Ministry of Interior (MoI)’s office in Sughd province will hold a scientific and practical conference formally titled “National Policy on Combating Terrorism: Problems and Prospects” in Khujand, the capital of the northern Sughd province on September 5.

Firouz Boqi, a spokesman for the Sughd police directorate, says the event is dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the 16th Session of the Supreme Council of Tajikistan and it is expected to bring together senior police officers from all regions of the country, as well as researchers and senior experts from the Academy of Sciences and the Center for Strategic Studies, etc.

The main objective of the event is in discussing ways to improve coordination of activities of the law enforcement authorities to jointly fight extremism and terrorism.

Over the first six months of this year, seven criminal proceedings have been instituted in the area against 56 activists of religious extremist organizations, including 54 members of the banned Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) and two activists of the outlawed religious extremist Hizb ut-Tahrir group, the Sughd prosecutor’s office said.  The cases have already moved to courts

In 2011, 14 criminal proceedings were instituted against 135 active members of the religious extremist groups, the source added.
