DUSHANBE

, April 7, Asia-Plus – A roundtable meeting formally titled “Realization of Recommendations of the Human Rights Committee Monitoring Civil and Political Rights” opened at the

Tajik

Center

for Strategic Studies in

Dushanbe

today morning.

According to information from the Center for Strategic Studies, the meeting is aiming to consider a progress of implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights by

Tajikistan

.

The source says Ms. Gulchehra Sharipova, Deputy Justice Minister, Mr. Tojiddin Turayev, deputy of the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower house of parliament), and Ms. Nigina Bahriyeva, Coordinator at Tajikistan’s Commission for Human Rights, are giving papers at the meeting on this subject.

It is the third of a series of roundtable meetings on activating informational campaign on bringing the country’s legislation in compliance with international human rights standards, which are being held in

Dushanbe

and Khujand in 2006.

The Human Rights Committee is the body of independent experts

that monitors implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights

by its State parties.  All States parties are obliged to submit regular reports to the Committee on how the rights are being implemented. States must report initially one year after acceding to the Covenant and then whenever the Committee requests (usually every four years). The Committee examines each report and addresses its concerns and recommendations to the State party in the form of “concluding observations”.
