DUSHANBE, August 28, Asia-Plus – Tajikistan’s Drug Control Agency (DCA) has summed up the results of work carried out by the DCA officers during the first phase of the “Poppy 2006” Operation (May-July 2006).

According to information from the DCA press service, officers from the DCA have destroyed more than 350,000 drug-containing plants in the area of totaling more than 21 hectares, mainly wild Indian hemp, over this two-month period.   

The counternarcotics operation, dubbed “Poppy 2006”, is carried out in Tajikistan annually.  It involves officers from the country’s ministries of interior, justice, health, border troops as well as committees for environmental protection and forestry, television and radio-broadcasting and local authorities.  This special operation aimed at destruction of drug-containing plants lasts till November 30.   

The second phase of the “Poppy 2006” will start in September and last three months.
