DUSHANBE, October 30, Asia-Plus – Tajikistan’s Telecom Technology LTD has been granted a license to provide telecommunications service based on the WLL technology using CDMA equipment, according to the Communications Regulatory Agency (CRA).

A source at the CRA said that Telecom Technology will provide this service beginning from the next year.

Wireless local loop (WLL), also called radio in the loop (RITL) or fixed-radio access (FRA) or fixed-wireless access (FWA) or Fixed Wireless Terminal (FWT), is the use of a wireless communications link as the “last mile/first mile” connection for delivering plain old telephone service (POTS) and broadband Internet to telecommunications customers.  Various types of WLL systems and tecnologie exist.

Code division multiple access (CDMA) is a form of multiplexing

(not a modulation scheme) and a method of multiple access

that does not divide up the channel by time

or frequency, but instead encodes data with a special code associated with each channel and uses the constructive interference properties

of the special codes to perform the multiplexing.  CDMA also refers to digital cellular telephony systems that make use of this multiple access scheme, such as those pioneered by Qualicomm, and W-CDMA by the Internaitonal Telecommunicaion Union or ITU.

According to Telecom Technology, since Tajikistan has exhausted the frequencies available for cellular communications in GSM standard, they have chosen the WLL technology.  This fixed-wireless access system is very suitable for installing telephone lines in remote rural areas, the source said.

The source noted that at present they are conducting negotiations with suppliers of equipment, including China’s Huawei and ZTI.

Telecom Technology LTD was founded in 1994.  The company was the first Internet provider in Tajikistan.
