DUSHANBE, December 8, Asia-Plus – International relief and campaigning organization Oxfam has spent 3.5 million pound stermings for implementing a number of projects in Tajikistan over the past five years, Olga Gazaryan, the Oxfam Regional Program Manager, announced at a news briefing in Dushanbe on December 7. 

According to her, the European Union, ECHO, Canada’s International Development Agency (CIDA) and other organizations have helped to fund Oxfam’s work in Tajikistan.  Gazaryan noted that Oxfam has also closely cooperated with local authorities and Tajikistan’s government in implementing the projects.     

For his part, Peter Pichler (phonetically spelled), Oxfam Country Program Manager for Tajikistan, speaking to journalists noted that during its working in Tajikistan, Oxfam had provided assistance to more than 214,000 vulnerable people in the Khatlon province.  Pichler added that at present Oxfam is projecting its new strategy to assist the population in overcoming poverty and plans to expand its activity into other regions of the country as well.   

Adam Leach, the Oxfam Regional Director for the Middle East, Eastern Europe and the CIS, told the news conference that Oxfam attaches significance to its activity in Tajikistan, providing assistance to vulnerable sections of the population. 

Oxfam has been working in Tajikistan since 2001.  Oxfam”s work involves improving access to food, livelihoods, water and health for those in need.  In the Khatlon province, Oxfam is providing clean water and sanitation facilities and helping poor people to make a living from agriculture.   Oxfam provides assistance in resolving the main challenges, facing the poor sections of the population, and in cooperation with civil society and the government makes contribution to the implementation of the poverty reduction plans.
