DUSHANBE, February 12, Asia-Plus — A roundtable meeting formally titled “Partnership for Peace” was held in Dushanbe on February 10. 

The meeting staged by the Dushanbe NGO Vector-Intellect and dedicated to consider issues related to the fight against terrorism gathered together senior students from a number of Dushanbe higher educational institutions.  

Deputy Justice Minister, Azizmat Imomov, telling the meeting noted that extremist religious organizations such as Hizb ut-Tahrir and Bayat have activated in the republic and increase in number trials of cases of their supporters is evidence of this.  Against backcloth of this, the issue of fighting terrorism is of great importance, according to him.  He noted that Tajikistan’s parliament last year published a list of organizations banned in Tajikistan as extremist.  

Nadia Marsan, the NATO Information Officer, telling the meeting noted that one of the main aspects of activity of NATO is cooperation in the field of providing international security.  In this context, one of the key objectives is to expand dialogue between allies and partners and exchange of information.  “NATO can be considered as a forum, to which sovereign states could apply for discussing security problems,” said Marsan, “In this connection, we ought to emphasis on two trends of cooperation – settlement of crises and partnership.”  

Participants at the meeting exchanged views on these issues with laying special stress on the fight against terrorism.
