DUSHANBE, May 8, Asia-Plus — Tajikistan’s Red Crescent Society (RCS) is joined by its branches around the country to celebrate World Red Cross Red Crescent Day today.

This year, World Red Cross Red Crescent Day is marked under the motto of “Working Together for Humanity”

According to the Delegation of International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in Tajikistan, there are 9,500 volunteers of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in Tajikistan, who are providing assistance to vulnerable people.  On occasion of World Red Cross Red Crescent Day, a ceremony of awards for the best volunteers will be held in Dushanbe today.

According to Mr. Elias Ghanem, head of the Tajik Delegation of IFRC, the latest large-scale action of aid provided by the IFRC Delegation was assistance to victims of mudslides that hit Vahdat, Rudaki, Shahrinav and Tursunzoda districts.

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement currently implements a number of various projects in Tajikistan, including those aimed at raising awareness of mines and unexploded ordnance, providing rural population with safe drinking water, raising awareness of HIV/AIDS and TB, international humanitarian law, etc.

A joint message by the presidents of the International Committee for Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies says that one of the cornerstones of the work carried out by the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is cooperation.  “It is by working together and working with others that we are able to rapidly respond to disasters and ensure that people receive protection and assistance during conflicts.”

The message, in particular, said, that no single government or organization alone can tackle the rising challenges posed by catastrophes, conflicts, health emergencies, poverty and migration.  “It will take solid coordination and better partnerships at all levels, including governments, donors, humanitarian agencies, the private sector and individuals, in order to reduce the impact of wars, disasters and disease, while making vulnerable communities stronger and safer.”

On the World Red Cross Red Crescent Day, they urge all members of society to protect life, health and human dignity, as we pledge to continue working together for humanity.

World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, celebrated each year since 1948, falls on the birthday of Henry Dunant, the founder of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Since the time that Dunant first conceived of the idea of the Red Cross, the Movement has grown to become the largest international humanitarian aid organization in the world.
