DUSHANBE, May 28, Asia-Plus – Henceforth, Tajikistan will have its own barcode (also bar code) for domestic products.

A decision of admission of Tajikistan to GS-1 (Global Standards One) was submitted for consideration to the General Assembly of the GS-1 Association in North Korea on May 23, according to the Eurasia Foundation of Central Asia Dushanbe office.

GS-1 Tajikistan organization has registered as part of Tajik Consumers’ Union Project under financial support of Eurasia Foundation of Central Asia.

“Presence of Tajikistan’s own prefix in international system of bar-coding will create more favorable conditions for Tajik entrepreneurs and facilitate export of domestic products,” Tajik Consumers’ Union head also barcode system introduction project manager, Bahodur Habibov said.

Zarona Ismoilova, chairperson of the Eurasia Foundation of Central Asia CO in Tajikistan, noted that barcode is a good tool to protect products against falsification.

A barcode (also bar code) is a machine-readable (using dark ink on white substrate to create high and low reflectance which is converted to 1s and 0s) representation of information in a visual format on a surface.  Originally barcodes stored data in the widths and spacings of printed parallel lines, but today they also come in patterns of dots, concentric circles, and hidden within images.  Barcodes can be read by optical scanners called barcode readers or scanned from an image by special software.  Barcodes are widely used to implement Auto ID Data Capture (IADC) systems that improve the speed and accuracy of computer data entry.
