DUSHANBE, July 3, Asia-Plus — On June 19, the US State Department financed the delivery of more than $5 million of donated medicine provided by Project HOPE to the Republican Clinical Immunization Center, the Republican Clinical Oncology Center, the Republican Clinical Center of Cardio-Vascular Surgery, the Republican Burn Center, the Khatlon Oblast Hospital #1, the Central District Hospital of Kolkhozobod, the Central District Hospital of Danghara, and the Central District Hospital of Tursunzoda.

The following private U.S. pharmaceutical companies have contributed to this humanitarian assistance effort with their generous donations: Merck, Glaxo-Smith-Klein, Rosche.

It is the third delivery made by Project HOPE this year.  Including this delivery, Project HOPE has provided over $20,632,000 worth of medicines donated by private pharmaceutical companies to Tajikistan’s hospitals in 2007.

Project HOPE has now been active in Tajikistan for five years, during which they have provided a total of $ 139,997,314 to Tajikistan’s medical institutions.

This delivery is especially significant because it includes Hepatitis B vaccines (19,719 doses) for 6,500 medical workers.  When donors offered the vaccination, the State Department chartered a special plane to transport the vaccine ahead of schedule.

This delivery also includes: Antibiotic – Rocefin for injection, which is widely used in all branches of medicine, and Anti-emetic – Zofran for injection, which is widely used for the treatment of oncology patients.

The hospitals that have already received medicines from Project HOPE have praised all these medications as being very high quality and effective.

These donations are possible thanks to the pharmaceutical companies who donated the medicine, the U.S. State Department which provided transport and runs the Humanitarian Aid Program, the Ministry of Health for its cooperation, and Project HOPE for coordinating all necessary activities both in the United States and Tajikistan to make the delivery safely and without delay.
