DUSHANBE, July 16, Asia-Plus — Tajik police rounded up a group of alleged drug smugglers in the Shuroobod district of the Khatlon province yesterday and confiscated more than 44.3 kilograms of heroin, Asia-Plus has learned at department for combating drug trafficking (drug police) of the Ministry of Interior (MoI).

The source at the drug police said that an operation carried out by their officers in the Khojaghalton area of Shuroobod on July 15 led the arrest of three local residents – Qiyomiddin Nizommiddin, Kabir Qodirov and Murodullo Odinayev.  “Packages containing totaling 44.335 kilograms of heroin were confiscated from them,” the source said.  Criminal proceedings have been instituted and an investigation is under way.        

The same day, drug police officers intercepted more than 50 kilograms of drugs in a single operation in the northern district of Istaravshan.  49.491 kilograms of raw opium and 838 grams of heroin were found hidden in a car VAZ-21015 belonging to the Dushanbe resident Hazrat Qurbonov.  Criminal proceedings have been instituted and an investigation is under way.
