DUSHANBE, November 7, Asia-Plus  — Tajikistan’s Representative to the United Nations Sirojiddin Aslov has expressed concern about intensification of activities of the Taliban Movement and Al-Qaeda terrorist network in Afghanistan.

According to the UN News Center (in Russian), speaking at the plenary session of the UN General Assembly on behalf of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on November 5, the representative of Tajikistan called for not admitting terrorists to participation in power-holding structures of the country and blocking sources of financing of them, including drug trafficking, “which remains the main source of financing of terrorists.”

Increase in production of narcotics funds from which go to purchasing weapons evokes serious concern, the Tajik envoy said.  He called for intensifying antiterrorist efforts not only in the territory of Afghanistan but also around it though creating belts of antiterrorist and financial security under coordinating role of the United Nations and with participation of neighboring countries.

Aslov stressed that all member nations of SCO support proposal of Tajikistan and Russia to create anti-drug belts of security around Afghanistan.

He also pointed to the necessity of development of the Afghan armed forces in order that they could provide security of their citizens by themselves.

Tajik representative also called for focusing on reconstruction of Afghanistan’s economy.  Highlighting the role of the regional organizations in peace-building, Aslov said that member nations of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization have been actively participating in implementation of a number of projects aimed at rehabilitating energy, transport and social infrastructures in Afghanistan.

Thus, Kazakhstan has announced the launch of a social program for investing in Afghanistan’s economy and implementation of humanitarian programs in Afghanistan.
