DUSHANBE, November 17, Asia-Plus  — The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) intends to launch a series of new projects in Tajikistan.

According to information posted on an official website of the Tajik MFA, His Highness the Aga Khan, Imam (Spiritual Leader) of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims, remarked this at a meeting with Tajik Foreign Minister Hamrokhon Zarifi in Berlin on November 13 on sidelines of a conference entitled “Central Asia and Europe:: New Economic Partnership for the 21st Century” that was held there on November 12-13.  

According to Tajik MFA, AKDN plans to launch projects aimed at construction of roads, rehabilitation of the Khorog airport, enhancement of health sector, as well as development of infrastructure in Afghanistan’s provinces and Tajik regions bordering on this country.       

The main objective of these projects is to create favorable conditions to develop two-way trade and humanitarian exchange between the two countries, Tajik MFA said.  

Besides, the sides also discussed issues related to the AKDN-supported projects that are currently being implemented in Tajikistan.  During the talks it was noted that opening of the University of Central Asia (UCA) is one of successful projects aimed at development of science and education as well as student exchange among countries of the region and training of skilled personnel.
