DUSHANBE, November 26, Asia-Plus  — Tajikistan is currently taking measures to recover its fee debt to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), according to the Ministry of Energy and Industries (MoEI).

The source at a MoEI said that Tajikistan has been member of UNIDO since 1993, but because of the unstable situation that was in the country in the 1990s Tajikistan has failed to pay its fees.  “Following this, Tajikistan’s membership of the organization remains just on the paper and it has not been yet included on any project of UNIDO,” the source said.

This year, Tajik Energy and Industries Minister Gul Sherali has attended one of sessions of UNIDO and held meeting with the UNIDO Director General.  During the meeting, Tajik minister said Tajikistan was interested in resuming cooperation with UNIDO.

The source added that the ministries of energy and industries, finance and foreign affairs are taking efforts to clear off 14-year fee debt of Tajikistan to UNIDO.  Tajikistan now owes 153,160 euros to UNIDO.

“Recently, we received invitation to attend the UNIDO conference that will be held in Vienna on December 3-7,” said the source, “Ministers and heads of large industrial enterprises from the UNIDO participating countries will take part at the conference.”
