DUSHANBE, December 6, Asia-Plus  — A conference dedicated to International Human Rights Day, which is marked on December 10, will be held in Dushanbe on December 7.

The event, organized by the UNDP CO Tajikistan, the OSCE Center in Dushanbe and Office the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, is expected to bring together more than 80 persons, including representatives from parliament, president’s office, ministries and organizations, as well as NGOs and international organizations active in Tajikistan.

Safarbek Soliyev, an employees of UNDP Co Tajikistan, said the conference aims  to discuss issues related to creation of the institution of ombudsman, a progress of implementation of the legal reform program, and fulfillment by Tajikistan of its obligations on human rights matters.

Human Rights Day is celebrated annually across the world on December 10.  The date was chosen to honor the United nations General Assembly’s adoption and proclamation, on December 10 1948, of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the first global enunciation of human right.   The commemoration was established in 1950, when the General Assembly invited all states and interested organizations to celebrate the day as they saw fit.

The day is normally marked by both high-level political conferences and meetings and by cultural events and exhibitions dealing with human rights issues. In addition, it is traditionally on December 10 that the five-yearly United Nations Prize in the Field of Human Rights is awarded.
