DUSHANBE, December 10, Asia-Plus — Activities to mark International Human Rights Day have been held in Dushanbe.

The Republican Bureau on Human Rights and Rule of Law (RBHRRL) said the result of week dedicated to Human Rights Day would be summed up today.  “Today, we are holding the last NGOs fair, at which local NGOs are presenting their publications on the human rights subject,” the source at a RBHRRL said, noting that two movies – Tajikistan’s “Ovora” (Rover) and Kyrgyzstan’s Trial“ – will be demonstrated at Vefa-Center in Dushanbe today afternoon.

We will recall that ”Ovora” by Gulandom Muhabbatova and Daler Rahmatov has been shown in some film festivals.  The film about a Tajik boy named Abdullo.  His grandmother and blind grandfather bring him up.  When the time comes for his circumcision, things begin to happen for Abdullo and the whole village.

Human Rights Day is celebrated annually across the world on December 10.

The date was chosen to honor the United nations General Assembly’s adoption and proclamation, on December 10 1948, of the Universal Declaration of human Rights, the first global enunciation of human right.  The commemoration was established in 1950, when the General Assembly invited all states and interested organizations to celebrate the day as they saw fit.

The day is a high point in the calendar of UN headquarters in New York, United States, and is normally marked by both high-level political conferences and meetings and by cultural events and exhibitions dealing with human rights issues. In addition, it is traditionally on December 10 the five-yearly United Nations Prize in the Field of Human Rights are awarded.

Many governments and non-government organizations (NGOs) active in the human rights field also schedule special events to commemorate the day.
