In the meantime, according to him, 647,600 Tajik left the country last year seeking better employment opportunities.

Ms. Sharifa Usmonova, deputy chief of the MoI migration service, noted that over the first eleven months of last year, they have registered more than 411,400 people who went to the Russian Federation in search of seasonal work.  She added that according to Russia’s Federal Migration Service (FMS), more than 364,000 Tajik nationals have become legalized in Russia over the same eleven-month period

“It is difficult to determine the exact number of Tajik labor migrants who are currently working in the Russian Federation, because the migration process is dynamic and over the first eleven months of 2007 alone, some 235,000 migrants have returned home,” Usmonova said.

According to her, Tajik nationals working in Russia last year committed 162,500 minor delinquencies.  Besides, 600 Tajik nationals now serve their sentences in Russian jails for different crimes, she said.
