DUSHANBE, January 21, Asia-Plus  — Beginning on February, import of right-hand drive (RHD) cars will be limited to Tajikistan.

Nematboy Rahmatov, the first deputy chief of Tajik Customs Service, remarked this on Monday, while giving a news conference on the results of work carried out by the customs office last year.

According to him, the government issues a resolution on this subject on January 1, 2008.

At present there are some 5,000 RHD cars in the country.

Speaking to journalists, the customs official said that Tajikistan cannot put a ban on import of RHD cars or any other goods because it is in contrary with provisions of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

“As Tajikistan is on the way to join the WTO, we should fulfill all requirements of this organization,” said Rahmatov, “Therefore, we cannot put the ban on imports; we just can limit them.”
