DUSHANBE, January 31, Asia-Plus  — Shamsiddin Shamsiddinov, who was one of leading members of the Islamic Revival Party, died in prison in Dushanbe on January 30.

Hikmatullo Sayfullozoda, a spokesman for the Islamic Revival Party, said in an interview with Asia-Plus that Shamsiddinov had died of gullet cancer. 

According to him, Shamsiddinov’s body was returned his relatives given, and his was buried in accordance with Islamic tradition in his native village Obburdon in Sughd’s Kuhistoni Mastchoh district today.              

We will recall that Shamsiddin Shamsiddinov was detained in Chkalovsk on May 30, 2003 with the approbation of the country’s military prosecutor and taken to one of distribution center in Dushanbe.    

Shamsiddinov was accused of participating in the crime grouping and of committing several grave crimes. Tajik law enforcement authorities stated that time that there were no political motives behind Shamsiddinov’s arrest.   

On January 13, 2004, the military board of the Supreme Court sentenced Shamsiddinov to 16 years’ imprisonment.  The sentence followed his conviction of organizing criminal group during the civil war (1992-1997), illegally crossing the border, and polygamy.
