DUSHANBE, January 31, Asia-Plus  — According to some law enforcement sources, some 500 kilograms of drugs have been seized in a single operation in southern Tajikistan.  Several persons, including Tajik border officers, have been detained on suspicion of having been involved in smuggling this consignment of drugs.

The reliable source said that an operation carried out by officers from the State Committee for National Security (GKNB) in Khatlon’s Qubodiyon district on January 26 led to the seizure of some 500 kilograms of drugs.

The totaled included some 400 kilograms of raw opium and some 100 kilograms of heroin, according to the source.  He added that several persons, including Tajik border officers, had been arrested on suspicion of having been involved in this crime.

It was probably the largest single consignment of drugs ever seized in Tajikistan.

In the meantime, representatives from the GKNB refrained from giving further details on this case.
