DUSHANBE, May 31, Asia-Plus  — Rising prices of basic food products as a sign of global food crisis are evidence of a complex economic situation both in Tajikistan and throughout the world as a whole, Ms. Gulchehra Bozorova, the chairperson of the Majlisi Namoyandgon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) Committee on Economy, Budget, Finance and Taxes, said in an interview with Tajikistan.

According to her, the complex economic situation in the country has been caused by both global and domestic factors.

“The most important factor that contributes to deterioration of the socioeconomic situation in the country is inflation, which has resulted from rising prices of petroleum and food products on the world market as well as the past severe winter,” said MP.  “Because of extreme winter weather and severe electricity shortages many industrial enterprises in the countries have not been in operation for several months.”

Ms. Bozorova denied speculations of some experts that to add to the mentioned problems facing the country, misreporting by Tajik officials under the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) programs has allegedly shaken international investor’s faith in Tajikistan as “unfounded.”

According to her, “there are no signs of decrease in interest of potential investors in Tajikistan.”
