DUSHANBE, August 12, 2008, Asia-Plus  — Candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDPT) has won in an August 10 parliamentary by-election in Qurghon Teppa constituency # 26, according to the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda (CCER). 

The source at a CCER said that Ms. Saodat Amirshoyeva, chairperson of the Khatlon justice directorate, who was nominated by the PDPT, won with more than 95 percent of the vote, with her opponent, Rano Nazirova of the Socialist Party (SPT), garnering just 4.7 percent of the vote.   

The Qurghon Teppa constituency numbers 74,600 voters living in the cities of Qurghon Teppa and Sarband as well as partially in the district of Bokhtar.  64,000 voters participated in the voting process. 

We will recall that the by-election was called following appointment of Asomuddin Saidov, who formerly represented the Qurghon Teppa constituency in the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) as Tajik Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan.
