DUSHANBE, December 9, 2008, Asia-Plus — An annual human rights conference entitled “Tajikistan and 60th Anniversary of Adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights” will be held at the Mercury Hotel in Dushanbe on December 10.
Organized by the OSCE Office in Tajikistan, UNDP CO Tajikistan, Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Department for Constitutional Guarantees of Human Rights within President’s Executive Office in the frames of the project, Enhancing Peace and Promoting Human Rights in Tajikistan, the conference is dedicated to International Human Rights, which is marked on December 10.
According to the UNDP Dushanbe Office, the conference is expected to bring together more than 80 participants, including MPs, experts, representatives of president’s office, government, civil society and international organizations to review the results of work carried out in the country last year to enhance the human rights situation and consider prospects and recommendations to develop human rights in Tajikistan.
The conference will also consider issues related to establishment of the ombudsman institution in Tajikistan, access to justice, implementation of the judicial system reform in the country and fulfillment by Tajikistan of its obligations on human rights agreements.
The promotion and protection of human rights has been a major preoccupation for the United Nations since 1945, when the Organization”s founding nations resolved that the horrors of The Second World War should never be allowed to recur.
Respect for human rights and human dignity “is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world”, the General Assembly declared three years later in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In 1950, all States and interested organizations were invited by the General Assembly to observe 10 December as Human Rights Day.
The Day marks the anniversary of the Assembly”s adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. Over the years, a whole network of human rights instruments and mechanisms has been developed to ensure the primacy of human rights and to confront human rights violations wherever they occur.
