DUSHANBE, January 22, 2009, Asia-Plus  – The Customs Service is expected to introduce the unified automated information system into operation in April this year, first deputy chief of the Customs Service, Nematboy Rahmatov, told reporters on January 21.

“The system commissioning is part of the Tajikistan customs modernization and infrastructure development project,” the customs official said, noting that the project allows introducing new operative policies and procedures of international standards to ensure proper function of the customs system.

“In the future, after successful implementation of this component, border guards will be able to join it, and thereby, the unified automated information system of border management will be created,” Rahmatov said.

According to him, the customs modernization project is implemented under a loan agreement between Tajikistan and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The Tajik Government has received a loan from the ADB toward the cost of regional customs modernization and infrastructure development project in Tajikistan.  The Regional Customs Modernization and Infrastructure Development Project Management Office under the Tajik Customs Service has served as the implementing agency for the project,
