DUSHANBE, April 8, 2009, Asia-Plus  — President Emomali Rahmon yesterday afternoon had a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart, President Dmitry Medvedev.

According to presidential press service, the two discussed issues related to the outcomes of the G-20 summit in London, mitigation of effects of the global financial and economic crisis and number of other issues being of mutual interest.

State and prospects of further expansion of bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and the Russian Federation was one of major topics of the conversation.

Rahmon and Medvedev, in particular, discussed the energy cooperation issues, including an official opening of the Sangtuda-1 hydroelectric power plat (HPP) scheduled for May.  Both presidents are expected to attend the station-opening ceremony.

They also discussed exploration and development of four natural-gas fields in Tajikistan in cooperation with the Russians state gas company, Gazprom.  Tajik leader asked to speed up the exploration work and Medvedev noted that appropriate instructions would be given to accelerate the work, presidential press service said.

Rahmon and Medvedev also considered a number of issues related to cultural and humanitarian cooperation between the two countries.
