DUSAHNBE, April 9, 2009, Asia-Plus  — 820 villagers of Childara village in the Tavildara district will have irrigated land for agriculture as a result of the Japanese grant assistance, press release issued by the Japanese Embassy in Dushanbe said.

Improved water delivery system is vital for agricultural development.  US$73,651 will be provided to the Tavildara district for “The Project for the Construction of Irrigation Canal in Childara Village, Childara Jamoat, Tavildara District” in the framework of Japanese Grant Assistance for Grass–roots Human Security Projects (GGP).

Reservoirs and 600 meter water canal will be constructed to irrigate 40 hectares of land for agricultural use. The Project will assist poverty reduction by extension of irrigated land in the mountainous area. It will also safeguard the concerned area against natural disaster.

Involvement of local population is vital for the Project.  The Water Users Association will be engaged in management of the newly constructed irrigation system.

Japan has assisted seven irrigation projects in Tajikistan in the last two years.  Improved water delivery will advance the efficiency of agricultural production, especially for the locations where water never reaches the land without the irrigation system.

The Tavildara district has started the Project this month supported by the Embassy of Japan in Dushanbe. The Project is expected to be completed within 12 months.

Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP) provides support to projects in the human security sectors at the grassroots level. GGP is provided to local governments, NGOs, and educational and medical institutions in developing countries. GGP has extended more than US$ 15.2 million for 231 projects in Tajikistan since 1996.
