KULOB, May 6, 2009, Asia-Plus  — Administration of the Kulob brickworks has recalled 100 of its 200 employees that were asked to take an unpaid vacation leave in January already.

The enterprise does not yet have an opportunity to recall the remaining 100 employees from their unpaid vacations because many of its clients have found other sources to purchase bricks.

The enterprise had stood idle since January due to severe electricity shortages.  “At present, because of shortage of funds local construction companies that have used our product are forced to suspend many facilities,” the source at the brickworks said, noting that over the first four months of this year they have produced only 300,000 bricks, which is a two-week norm.

The enterprise’s administration now hopes for an order from the Vanj district in Gorno Badakhshan.  “A delegation of the Vanj district is coming here today to make an order for bricks for construction of school in Vanj,” said the source, “The command of motor rifle regiment 149 of Russian military base deployed in Kulob has also intended to make a large order for bricks.”
