KULOB, May 14, 2009, Asia-Plus — Khatlon’s Farkhor district has fulfilled its conscription target for the first time over the past eight years.
Speaking in an interview with Asia-Plus, local recruitment officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Berdikhon Ashourov, said that all officers from the Farkhor military registration and enlistment office had been replaced this year. Ashourov himself has been transferred to Farkhor from Kulob.
“During this spring’s conscription campaign, we have met with parents of young men at the age of conscription and held meetings with the population in bazaars, mosques and jamoats,” said Ashourov, “People trusted us and brought their sons to the military registration and enlistment office.” He added that 10 local young men having higher education had volunteered for military service.
The spring conscription campaign is carried out from April through May, and the draft affects able-bodied male citizens in the age bracket of 18 years old to 27 years old who are not members of the armed forces reserve.
