DUSHANBE, June 1, 2009, Asia-Plus  – Tajikistan have organized activities to mark International Children’s Day.

In Dushanbe, the main celebrations to mark this holiday are being held in the Children’s Park, Shavkat Saidov, a spokesman for the Dushanbe mayor, said.

Organizer of the events is the Dushanbe education directorate.  A theatrical show will held for children in the park. Children music groups Ghunchahoi Poytakht and Mehtariyon will perform concerts and a number of sports activities and quizzes will be held on occasion of the children’s holiday.  Besides, the results of photo and drawing competitions entitled “Seeing the World through the Eyes of a Child” will be summed up today.

A number of charitable actions will also take place in the city today, Saidov said.

Children”s Day is an event celebrated on various days in many places around the world. The holiday is simply set to honor children and minors.

The International Children”s Day is widely celebrated on June 1.  Children”s Day had its origin in the World Conference for the Wellbeing of Children in Geneva in 1925.  It is not clear as to why June 1 was chosen as the International Children”s Day: one theory has it that the Chinese consul-general in San Francisco (USA) gathered a number of Chinese orphans to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival in 1925, which happened to be on June 1 that year, and also coincided with the conference in Geneva.  However, each country chooses its own day to commemorate it.
