KHUJAND, June 11, 2009, Asia-Plus  — Over the first five months of this year, an external trade turnover of the northern Sughd province, including electrical power and natural gas, has amounted to 304.1002 million U.S. dollars, which was 85.4 percent of the January-May 2008 level or 52.0367 million dollars fewer, according to the Sughd agency for statistics.

The trade balance was negative and amounted to 195.8286 million dollars.

Exports of goods in January-May 2009 amounted to 54.1358 million US dollars, which was 11.6 percent, or 7.1166 million dollars, fewer than in the same period of 2008.

Imports of goods into the province over the report period have amounted to 249.9644 million dollars, which was 15.2 percent or 44.9201 million dollars fewer than in January-May 2008.

Over the report period the CIS countries accounted for 62.6 percent (190.2565 million dollars) of Sughd’s external trade turnover and the far abroad countries accounted for 37.4 percent (113.8437 million dollars).

Sughd’s main export partners over the report period were: Russia – 40.9 percent, Switzerland – 16.8 percent, Italy – 9.3 percent, Uzbekistan – 5.2 percent, Kazakhstan – 4.6 percent, Afghanistan – 3.8 percent, Iran – 3.7 percent, and Kyrgyzstan – 3.1 percent.

Imports came mainly from the CIS countries: Russia – 36.2 percent, Kazakhstan – 14.7 percent, Ukraine – 3.4 percent, Kyrgyzstan – 2.8 percent, and of the following far abroad countries: China – 16.2 percent, Lithuania – 6.3 percent, Korea – 4.0 percent, Turkey and Iran – 2.5 percent each, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) – 1.9 percent.
