KHUJAND, June 20, 2009, Asia-Plus  — An anti-narcotics action, entitled “Say “No” to Narcotics” has been launched in Khujand, the capital of the northern Sughd province.

Staged by the Sughd counternarcotics directorate in cooperation with the Sughd directorate for youth, sports and tourism’s affairs and open joint-stock company (OJSC) Sorbon (Khujand passenger transport services), the action that was launched on June 18 is dedicated to International Days against Drug Abuse and illicit Trafficking, which is marked on June 26.

The main objective of the action is in propagating healthy lifestyle and promoting active involvement of the population, particularly youth and teenagers in healthy lifestyle.

“Banners calling for life without narcotics have been put on ten fixed-route taxies in the city as mobile visual agitation and the action runs through May 26,” the source at the Sughd counternarcotics directorate said.

By resolution 42/112 on December 7 1987, the General Assembly decided to observe 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.  This resolution recommended further action with regard to the report and conclusions of the 1987 International Conference on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
