KHUJAND, June 22, 2009, Asia-Plus  — Construction of a new building for municipal homeless shelter in Khujand, the capital of Sughd province has completed and an official opening of the new homeless shelter is scheduled for June 24

Speaking in an interview with Asia-Plus, Ms. Lola Ashourova, chairperson of the Sughd Society of Disable People, said the new homeless shelter was more spacious and it had residential premises alone with an overall space of 210 square meters. “The shelter also has separate kitchen, dining hall, bathroom, toilet and first-aid center,” Ashourova said.

According to her, the new shelter has been built mainly due to donations made by companies and the public.  “In all, 56,000 somoni have been spent for construction of the shelter; of this amount, 8,000 somoni have been provided by the Khujand mayor’s office and 9,000 somoni have provided by a number of local entrepreneurs,” said Ashourova, “Cellular operator MLT and companies Ilhom Hoji and Sputnik have also supported construction of the new shelter.”

The old building of the shelter that was house for 15 people was in a very poor state and might collapse at any time, and therefore, it was decided to construct the new building.  Construction of the new building began in April this year and it is able to accommodate 30 people.
