KHOROG, July 1, 2009, Asia-Plus  — Officers from the Vanj police department seized some 20 kilograms of narcotics at the end of last week, Muzofirsho Zolshoyev, a spokesman for the GBAO police directorate, said in an interview with Asia-Plus.

“On June 26, at about 11:30 pm a group of officers from the Vanj police department, who were returning from a business trip to the Yazgulem jamoat, saw a number of unknown persons in the Khekhik area,” said the spokesman, “When policemen stopped to know who they are, the last escaped towards the Panj River.  Next morning, the Vanj police and security officers found some 20 kilograms of narcotics on the bank of the river.”

A totaled included more than 12 kilograms of heroin, 3.155 kilograms of hashish, 3.44 kilograms of hemp and 730 grams of raw opium.  Besides, two Afghan headscarves, one assault rifle Kalashnikov and one hand grenade RGD-5 were found on the spot.

Criminal proceedings have been instituted and an investigation is under way. Zolshoyev said.
