DUSHANBE, July 9, 2009, Asia-Plus — Speaking to reporters in Dushanbe, Vladimir Sobkalov, the deputy head of Tajik Railways, said on July 7 that despite rainy spring the project for construction of a railroad to connect Dushanbe to Qurghon Teppa has not been suspended and it currently runs according to schedule.
According to him, the Dushanbe-Vahdat-Qurghon Teppa railroad construction project is implemented by the construction company, Anvar & Co, and specialists from Tajik Railways. “In all, some 100 people have been involved in the project,” Sobkalov said.
Construction of the railway link connecting Dushanbe and Qurghon Teppa officially commenced on March 20 this year. Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, speaking at the launch ceremony, invited foreign investors to take part in the project. The cost of building the 146-kilometer link is estimated at 129.9 million U.S dollars.
The present 469-kilometer railroad connecting Dushanbe to Qurghon Teppa runs through the territory of neighboring Uzbekistan.
