KHUJAND, July 11, 2009, Asia-Plus  — Sughd law enforcement authorities have reported detention of another alleged activist of the outlawed religious extremist Hizb ut-Tahrir organization in the province.

According to press service of the Sughd police directorate, the 31-year-old entrepreneur from Khujand Ahmadjon Ochilov was detained by local police on July 9 on suspicion of having had contacts with Hizb ut-Tahrir.  “The preliminary investigation has established that Ochilov had been financial aide to the detained Hizb ut-Tahrir activist Jumaboy Abdurahmonov since January 2009,” the source said.

Criminal proceedings have been instituted against Ochilov under the provisions of Article 307, Part 2 (public calling for forcible overthrow of or change to the constitutional order in Tajikistan) of Tajikistan’s Penal Code and an investigation is under way.

The Sughd prosecutor Khairullo Saidov said in an interview with Asia-Plus that over the first six months of this year, the Sughd prosecutor’s office had instituted criminal proceedings against 11 members of Hizb ut-Tahrir and four members of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU).
