DUSHANBE, October 1, 2009, Asia-Plus  — A presentation of publication on elimination of all forms of discrimination against women was held in Dushanbe today.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Ms. Nargis Azizova, Gender and Governance Adviser, UNIFEM CO in Tajikistan, noted that  preparations are currently made in Tajikistan for events, within frameworks of which all partners, including the government, civil society and women themselves will be invited to the dialogue on women’s rights.

“For these purposes, a short review of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women has been published in Tajik and Russian,” said Ms. Azizova, “We hope this booklet will become a useful resource material also for lawyers, public servants, students, teachers, and other persons who want to know more about women’s rights.”

UNIFEM is the women”s fund at the United Nations. It provides financial and technical assistance to innovative programs and strategies to foster women”s empowerment and gender equality.  Placing the advancement of women”s human rights at the center of all of its efforts, UNIFEM focuses its activities on four strategic areas: 1) reducing feminized poverty; 2) ending violence against women; 3) reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS among women and girls; and 4) achieving gender equality in democratic governance in times of peace as well as war.

Having started in 1999 in three Central Asian countries (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan), in 2001 UNIFEM Regional Office in Almaty expanded its activities to the whole Commonwealth of Independent States, and is now implementing programs and projects in 12 countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan).  In Tajikistan, UNIFEM is currently implementing several projects within the frameworks of the selected key themes.
