DUSHANBE, November 16, 2009, Asia-Plus — Beginning on January 1, 2010, the European Commission’s Delegation to Tajikistan will launch the project for providing financing of dehqon (peasant) farms in Tajikistan, Boris Filippov, the project manager, the European Commission’s Delegation to Tajikistan, said in an interview with Asia-Plus.

According to him, the main objective of the project is to expand access to bank loans for Tajik farmers.  “A total cost of the project is €7 million and it will be financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD),” Filippov said, noting that the project will allow farmers to improve quality and production of agricultural goods.

“The project involves the marketing issues and it will give farmers an opportunity to find out what agricultural crops are more profitable to be cultivated for export,” he said, adding that the project also provides technical assistance to the banking sector of the country.

Besides, the European Commission jointly with International Finance Corporation (IFC) will also sponsor the project, Agrileasing, which will give Tajik farmers an opportunity to lease agricultural machines and promote enhancement of Tajikistan’s farm produce
