DUSHANBE, November 24, 2009, Asia-Plus  — Increase in the number of vehicles as well passenger carriages and cargo shipments will lead to rise in traffic intensity on motor roads in the country, according to the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC).

Traffic intensity is expected to increase by 30%-40% by 2015 and by 40%-50% by 2025.  “For example, current traffic intensity on the road Dushanbe-Shahrinav-Tursunzoda is more than 1,400 vehicles per day,” said the source, “By 2015, the traffic intensity on this highway will increase to some 2,000 vehicles per day and by 2025, it is expected to increase to 4,800 vehicles.”

In connection with increase in trade with Afghanistan, China and Kyrgyzstan, the traffic intensity on the roads Dushanbe-Khujand-Chanak, Dushanbe-Qurghon Teppa-Nizhny Panj and Dushanbe-Kulob-Khorog-Kulma is also expected to rise.

A MoTC expects all main and local roads in the country to be asphalted by 2025.

The total length of motor roads in Tajikistan is some 13,968 kilometers; of that, 5,298 kilometers are main roads and 8,670 kilometers are local roads.
