NGOs network discusses reasons for local youths joining religious sects

KHUJAND, December 7, 2009, Asia-Plus  — A meeting of representatives from Tajik and Kyrgyz NGOs being members of the Network of NGOs of Ferghana Valley, Dolina Mira (Valley of Peace), took place in Khujand, the capital of the Tajik northern province of Sughd on December 4-6.

According to the Network Secretariat, reasons for local youths joining various religious sects that are officially banned in the region’s countries and ways to prevent possible religious-based conflicts were among major topics of the meeting.

The meeting participants also developed the plan of actions of Network for the coming two years.  The plan provides for holding a series of activities and events to explain religion-related subjects to senior school students living in border areas of Ferghana Valley, the source said.

Established at the Central Asian Assembly in April 2004, Network of NGOs of Ferghana Valley, Dolina Mira, is a voluntary informal association of non-profit, non-governmental organizations of Ferghana Valley.  The network members include non-governmental organizations in border areas of Ferghana Valley of Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, officially registered in their countries, interested in achieving the goals and objectives of the Network.
