DUSHANBE, January 5, 2010, Asia-Plus  — In 2009, all categories of farms produced more than 232,000 tons of potatoes, which is 2 percent more than it was originally planned (227,000 tons), according to the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA).

Last year, Tajik farmers planted potatoes on an area of 11,252 hectares and average potato yields of 20.6 tons per one hectare were reported, the source at a MoA said.

According to him, farming units in the northern province of Sughd overfulfilled the 2009 target by 15 percent, producing more than 109,000 tons of potatoes instead of the originally planned 95,000 tons.

Khatlon farmers produced some 27,600 tons of potatoes.  Their target was 26,110 tons.

Farmers in Gorno Badakhshan overfulfilled last year’s potato target by 6 percent, producing 31,000 tons of potatoes instead of the originally planned 29,100 tons.

In the meantime, districts subordinate to the center (RRPs) failed to full their last year’s potato target.  They produced 64,500 ton of potatoes in 2009, while their target was determined at 77,000 tons of potatoes, the source said.
