DUSHANBE, January 22, 2010, Asia-Plus — Uzbekistan plans to review borders of zones of responsibility for air traffic services, Anvar Makhsoudov, director general of the State Unitary Enterprise Tajikaeronavigatsiya (air navigation services), remarked at a news conference in Dushanbe on January 21.
According to him, Uzbekistan has sent an official letter on reviewing the agreement that was singed in 1993 to Tajik MFA recently. “Uzbek authorities offer to review the structure of air space that has not changed since the Soviet time,” said Makhsoudov, “This concerns the whole territory of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.”
“Uzbekistan has raised the issue of reviewing the agreement just now; however, Tajikistan has expected such steps. Tajikaeronavigatsiya has been making preparations for this and drafted an agreement on this subject that was submitted for consideration to the Ministry of Transport and Communications three days ago.”
He stressed that under the agreement of 1993, Tajikistan operates up to 115 kilometers of Uzbekistan’s air space in the west, the Tursunzoda district bordering on Uzbekistan. For its part, Uzbekistan operates the air space over the Tajik northern province of Sughd at the height of more than 4,200 meters. “Now, Uzbekistan proposes to review borders of the zones of responsibility and define them along the countries’ common border,” Makhsoudov said.
