DUSHANBE, January 23, 2010, Asia-Plus  — The population and housing census will be conducted in Tajikistan from September 21 to September 30 this year, Ms. Bakhtiya Muhammadiyeva, the first deputy head of the State Committee for Statistics, told reporters in Dushanbe on January 22.

According to her, 27 million somoni will be allocated from the national budget for the conduct of the 2010 population and housing census in the country.  “Besides we are conducting negotiations with donors on providing support for the upcoming census,” said Muhamamdiyeva, “One of partners is the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), which provides consultative assistance.  To conduct the census we need funds at the rate of US$1.70 per each resident of the country.”

She added that it would the second population census since Tajikistan gained independence.  The previous population census was conducted in the country in 2000.

The country’s population is now estimated at more than 7.51 million; women constitute more than 49 percent of Tajikistan’s population, minors constitute 45 percent and people of pension age constitute 5.4 percent of the country’s population, Muhammadiyeva said.
