DUSHANBE, May 12, 2010, Asia-Plus — Floods and mudflows that hit various regions of the country on May 5-7 have damaged some 6,000 hectares of areas under crops, the source at the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) told Asia-Plus Wednesday afternoon, referring to data provided by the Committee for Emergency Situations (CES) and the Khatlon agriculture directorate.
According to him, floods and mudflows destroyed some 3,000 hectares of cotton fields in Khatlon province. The worst hit areas were districts of Vose, Muminobod, Shahritus, Qubodiyon, Jilikul and Hamadoni. To-date, local farmers have managed to rehabilitate only 55 hectares of cotton fields.
Besides, floods have damaged 2,500 hectares of areas under grains, 230 hectares under vegetables, 64 hectares under potatoes, 44 hectares under watermelons, melons and gourds, 209 hectares of pastures ad more than 700 hectares of orchards and vineyards.
Disasters have also killed some 1,500 head of cattle and sheep and goats and destroyed 35 bee families and 756 silk cocoon balls, the source said.
According to the preliminary data, damage caused to the country’s agrarian sector by this month’s disasters has been estimated at 8 million somoni.
