DUSHANBE, May 21, 2010, Asia-Plus  — To improve protection of human rights and civil liberties in Muslim world, the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) plans to set up a permanent and independent commission, the OIC Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu remarked at a meeting with reporters in Dushanbe on May 20.

He stressed that all the Muslim states took the view that that organization would protect rights of Muslims throughout the world.

“Organization of the Islamic Conference has an elaborate plan to promote human rights, the rule of law, good governance and furthering civil liberties in the Muslim world,” the OIC secretary general said.

According to him, they hope to set up the permanent and independent commission for human rights in the near future.  Mr. Ihsanoglu noted that decision to set up the commission was made at the 36th session of the Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) of the OIC Member States in Damascus, Syria in May 2009.

“Since that time, we have worked through numerous issues regarding the establishment of such a commission and hoped that the establishment of the commission will be announced in Dushanbe, however, some aspects remain we have to work though.  But I can assure you that we will set up the commission in the near future in order to prove adherence of Islam to humanism,” he stated.
