DUSHANBE. June 8. “Asia-Plus” — High-level international conference “Water for Life” opens today in Dushanbe.

More than 70 countries as well as representatives of such international organizations as the UN, OSCE, UNESCO and so forth have confirmed their participation in the event. In the course of this three-day event the participants will discuss issues of transboundary cooperation, adaptation to climate change, reduction of disaster risks and integrated water resource management.

The overall goal of the conference is to conduct a medium-term comprehensive overview of implementation of the International Decade for Action “Water for Life” 2005-2015, analyze the progress of achievement of international objectives connected with water related problems and forecast the perspectives of implementation of international obligations linked with water and water issues by  the year of 2015, Tajik Foreign Ministry told the AP.

“The conference will also let discuss and select new measures for speeding up efforts on timely and complete achievement of these goals. The conference will become a platform for discussion of a full range of goals linked with water issues,” the source has said.

The conference will be accompanied by the international exhibition “Water for Life” and an exhibition of children’s drawings dedicated to the International Decade “Water for Life”.

The participants are also expected to adopt a ministerial declaration that will be presented at the 65th session of the UN General Assembly.
