Case of hemorrhagic fever reported in Kulob

KULOB, July 21, 2010, Asia-Plus  — The 52-year-old resident of the city of Kulob has been diagnosed with hemorrhagic fever, Asia-Plus has learned at Kulob center for sanitary and epidemiological supervision.

It is the first case of hemorrhagic fever in the area this year, the source said.   

 We will recall that an outbreak of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) was reported in Tajikistan lat summer.  In August 2009, three persons, including physician, died of hemorrhagic fever in Tajikistan.

CCHF gets its name from its discovery in the Crimea in the 1940s, and subsequent outbreak in the Congo in the late ”60s.  The disease is carried by ticks, which often live off wild and domesticated animals, and has been found in Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean, parts of China, and Central Asia.
