DUSHANBE, July 21, 2010, Asia-Plus  — Under the conditions when unprecedented natural disasters and global challenges threaten mankind, dialogue, interaction and mutual understanding existing within the Inter-Parliamentary Union are taking on special significance,      Chairman of the Majlisi Milli (Tajikistan’s upper chamber of parliament, Mahmadsaid Ubaidulloyev, stated yesterday while addressing the Third World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva, Shavkat Saidov, an aide to the Majlisi Milli speaker, told Asia-Plus on Wednesday.

The conference kicked off on July 19 and is concluding today,

Parliaments’ support for cooperation, co-existence and communication between secular and religious political subjects, concord of pragmatism of the West and wisdom of the East would be an important factor to strengthen confidence and prevent new cultural, ethnic and political antagonisms, Tajik speaker stressed.

“We also consider it expedient to use potential and broad opportunities of the Inter-Parliamentary Union for reaching a meeting of minds not only in harmonization, unification and identification of laws but also in development of a common mechanism of concerted actions for an adequate fight against modern challenges,” Ubaidulloyev noted.

The 3rd World Conference of Speakers of Parliament convened by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is a global summit focusing on democracy, the role of legislative institutions and their relationship with the United Nations. The broad theme for the 2010 Conference is Parliaments in a world of crisis: securing global democratic accountability for the common good.

At the close of the proceedings, the speakers of parliament are expected to adopt a draft declaration on securing global democratic accountability for the common good.  This text has been revised by the Preparatory Committee in the light of amendments received from many parliaments.  The revised draft declaration was circulated to all Speakers of Parliament on 20 May.
