DUSHANBE, September 21, 2010, Asia-Plus  – Tajikistan is successfully implementing the adopted national development strategy and poverty reduction strategy for 2010-2012 that were worked out on the basis of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), President Emomali Rahmon noted while delivering a statement at the 65th session of the UN General Assembly in New York on September 20.

According to him, the poverty rate in the country reduced from 72.4 percent in 2003 to 46.7 percent in 2009.  In 2012, the poverty rate in Tajikistan is expected to reduce to 41.4 percent,” President Rahmon noted.

On the difficulties in implementation of MDGs, Tajik leader named financial, food and energy crises, the global climate changes, natural disasters and artificial barriers to cargo transit as the main factors that impede implementation of MDGs in the country.

President Rahmon considers that the current level of regional cooperation in Central Asia does not meet requirements of MDGs and joint response to modern challenges and threats.

He also seconded proposal on providing access to all modern energy services until 2013.

Touching upon the environmental protection and atmospheric emission issues, Rahmon stressed that Tajikistan was ranked 105th among 213 nations and it is in the last place among Central Asia’s countries in terms of atmospheric emissions.  All this is due to use of water in the power industry.  “In this connection, Tajikistan plans to construct small, medium-sized and large hydropower plants,” Rahmon stressed.
